After suffering with many complications, a young woman finally delivered her baby girl. The child was small, born very prematurely, so much so, that even to hold her was painful for her. At her level of prematurity, the nerve endings under the skin were extremely sensitive causing pain when the skin was touched. She spent much of her first months isolated in an incubator until such time as she could be lovingly held by her mother.

The young mom was so distraught over her daughter that she prayed an unusual prayer, "Lord Jesus, if I can't hold her, you hold her." Day after day the women prayed and cried, until her child became healthy enough to leave the hospital. Life was good.

Four years later, this same mother and her healthy daughter were attending a ball game. The four-year old's older brother was playing and the family looked forward to a day together. Amidst the shouting and cheering, the little stopped and looked strangely at her mother. "Do you smell that? Mom? Do you smell that?"

Trying to humor her daughter, the mother said, "Mmm.. yes popcorn and hot dogs. Do you want some?"
Frustrated the little girl turned and looked to the horizon. There in the distance, a rainstorm was moving toward the ball field. A cool breeze proceeded it and on the wind, the smell of rain. "That!" She said, "Do you smell that?"
The mother said, "Yes honey. That's the rain coming. That is what you smell."

"No Momma, that's not the rain. That's what He smells like when He holds you!" Surprised, the mother caught her breath. The memory of her prayer returned and she laughed out loud at His faithfulness. Not only had He come to hold her daughter, He was holding her still. He had never stopped. She meant for the moment, He meant for forever.

Take time today to recall any forgotten prayers. Look back at how gracious God has been to you. Take a moment to smell the rain and remember!
